Learning Consultant
Patty cares deeply about how students self-regulate and thrive at Duke and how faculty and staff can grow what they know about neurodiversity. In her current role as Learning Consultant and Neurodiversity Specialist at the ARC, Patty provides one-on-one support to all undergraduate students seeking a path forward in self-management of ADHD, learning disabilities, autism spectrum, executive function challenges, and learning differences of all kinds. Her consultations promote growth in several areas including flexible thinking, organization and prioritization, deep focus, goal setting, sensory integration, task management, metacognition, and working memory. In prior work at Duke, Patty served as a Communications Consultant and Adjunct Assistant Professor in Pratt School of Engineering. Before joining Duke, Patty taught graduate courses in teacher education at the University of Southern California, served as a research scientist and teaching fellow at the University of California, Los Angeles, and conducted program evaluations and professional development K-20. Her time abroad includes teaching in Hungary and Russia, and studying in Italy and the UK. Patty earned her M.Ed. and Ph.D. in Education/Special Education at UCLA, and her teaching credential and M.A. in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages at California State University, Los Angeles. She is a certified Mental Health First Aid provider and enjoys spending time with her therapy-dog-in-training, Oliver.
