Peer Tutor
The Peer Tutoring program aims to provide small group tutorial services led by a tutor who is knowledgeable in the course material and can provide content-specific support and tutoring for the students in their group.
A successful peer tutor will:
- Be very comfortable with the course material
- Learn and implement clear ways of explaining complex course material to students new to the subject area
- Gain experience tutoring a group of students and building a safe learning environment
Time Commitment:
- Peer tutors receive $15/hour for the 3-7.5hours/week commitment. In this time, tutors will:
- Lead 2-5 group tutorial sessions a week
- Allot one half-hour of preparation time per session
- Complete and submit weekly attendance records
- Communicate with program staff any student concerns, questions of boundaries, etc.
- Additional paid time commitments throughout the semester will include 2 professional development opportunities.
Team Tutor
More experienced Peer Educators (have already worked for SAGE or Peer Tutoring at least one semester) may apply for Team Tutor.
One Team Tutor will be hired for each subject area. Their job responsibilities will include the following (in addition to the base responsibilities outlined above):
- Manage tutors for a specific subject area
- Attend all tutor professional development sessions
- Assist with recruitment
- Post fliers throughout campus
- Classroom presentations
- Ask professors for referrals
- Assist with onboarding mid-semester tutors
- Operate as Peer Tutoring representative for assigned professors and classrooms
- Obtain syllabus and ensure that all tutors have it by uploading to Sakai
- Provide classroom presentations to market services at the start of the semester
- Conduct meetings with professors for classroom updates
- Communication with academic guides/knowing which rooms in residence halls are good for tutoring
- Operate as main point of contact for all tutor concerns
- Clarification of course requirements
- Questions pertaining to attendance and data management
- Basic payroll questions
- Suggestions for best use of prep time
- How to reserve a study room, tips for tutoring in specific classes/courses, etc
- Team Tutors will be paid $15.50 per hour and can be compensated up to 4 hours per week
Senior Tutor
More experienced Peer Educators (have already worked for SAGE or Peer Tutoring at least one semester) may apply for Senior Tutor.
We will hire 1 Senior Tutor per semester who will:
- Serve as a point of contact and resource for all peer tutors (across all subject matter)
- Attend all tutor professional development sessions
- Assist with recruitment
- Post fliers throughout campus
- Classroom presentations
- Ask professors for referrals
- Assist with onboarding mid-semester tutors
- The Senior Tutor will be paid $16 per hour and can be compensated up to 5 hours per week

Job Requirements:
Peer tutors must:
- Have taken the course for which you wish to tutor and earned a grade of B+ or higher
- Be available for all determined times for tutoring sessions and two professional development events
Team Tutors and the Senior Tutor must also:
- Have at least one semester of experience with Duke Peer Education (SAGE or Peer Tutoring)
